English as a second language (ESL)

Welcome to the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at The Reading People. We are dedicated to providing FREE learning options to adult individuals who wish to improve their English skills. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner, our ESL program offers a range of services to help you achieve your language learning goals.

ESL Program Highlights

All ESL services are offered 100% free of charge.

  • One-on-One ESL Tutoring: We offer personalized one-on-one ESL tutoring sessions tailored to your specific needs and learning pace. Our experienced tutors work closely with you to enhance your vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

  • Group ESL Classes: Join our dynamic group ESL classes designed to foster interaction and collaboration among adult learners. These classes provide a supportive learning environment where you can practice English conversation, grammar, and comprehension skills.

  • Citizenship Classes: For adults preparing to become U.S. citizens, we offer citizenship classes to assist you in acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills for the citizenship exam. These classes cover essential topics such as civics, history, and government.

Who Can Benefit from our ESL Programs?

Our ESL programs currently help immigrants, refugees, and international visitors from many countries worldwide. We welcome adult individuals with varying levels of English proficiency, ranging from beginner to advanced. Regardless of your background or language abilities, we are here to support you in meeting your personal, academic, and career goals.

Assessment and Enrollment Process

To ensure we meet your specific learning needs, we begin with an English Reading Assessment conducted by our ESL Coordinator. This assessment helps determine your current English proficiency level. It takes approximately one hour and can be scheduled at a time that suits you best.

Once the assessment is complete, we will match you with a tutor based on your availability and preferences. Tutoring sessions can take place in person or online, providing flexibility to accommodate your schedule. If you have greater availability, you may be matched with a tutor more quickly.

ESL Class Details

Currently, our ESL classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Classes typically last about an hour. All necessary learning materials are provided free of charge. Pre-registration is required. Please note that class schedules may vary throughout the year.

We encourage all adult students to take advantage of both individual tutoring and group classes simultaneously. There are no limits on the amount or frequency of your participation.
